What a question looks like

Example questionUse 27, 47, and 74 to write the four different addition and subtraction facts.

Answer: 27 + 47 = 74; 47 + 27 = 74; 74 − 27 = 47; 74 − 47 = 27

  1. 27 and 47 are the two parts; 74 is the whole.
  2. Add the parts in either order, then subtract each part from the whole.
Teaching notes

Use this practice well

Arrange the two parts and their whole in a triangle. Show that changing the order of the parts keeps the sum, then undo addition with subtraction.

What this develops

Use three related numbers to write two addition and two subtraction facts.

A mistake to watch for

Using one of the parts as the whole makes a false related equation.

Ways to use it

  • Connect addition and subtraction.
  • Check inverse operations.
  • Use number triangles as a warm-up.

Scope and limits

This page covers addition/subtraction families; multiplication/division families can be practiced in the times-table tools.
