Write clues that teach as well as test
Enter three to fifteen answer-and-clue pairs, one per line. Each answer must be a single word of two to fifteen letters. Definitions, examples, and short factual clues work better than clues that repeat the answer in another form.
The maker places words into one connected grid and returns a separate solution. If the words do not share enough letters for a connected crossword, it explains the shortage instead of dropping entries. Review the finished clue wording before printing for a class.
Use this practice well
Write clues that ask for meaning or recall rather than simply repeating the answer. Review the finished grid to ensure every clue is clear for your intended audience.
What this develops
Enter answer-and-clue pairs to make a custom crossword and solution.
A mistake to watch for
Ambiguous clues can have several valid answers even when the grid expects only one.
Ways to use it
- Review class vocabulary.
- Make a reading-chapter recap.
- Build a themed puzzle for a club.
Scope and limits
Some word sets cannot form a connected grid; try related words that share letters.
