What a question looks like
Example questionRead point P on the coordinate grid. Write its coordinates.
Answer: (9, -9)
- Read 9 on the horizontal x-axis and -9 on the vertical y-axis.
- Write x first, then y: (9, -9).
Use this practice well
Read the horizontal coordinate before the vertical coordinate. Sketching axes and marking the origin makes negative coordinates and reflections easier to reason through.
What this develops
Practise ordered pairs, positions, and simple coordinate changes.
A mistake to watch for
Reversing an ordered pair changes the point except when both coordinates happen to match.
Ways to use it
- Introduce x-then-y notation.
- Practise quadrants and reflections.
- Check plotted points against written answers.
Scope and limits
Reading and plotting questions include a coordinate grid; reflection and distance questions use written ordered pairs.
