What a question looks like

Example question35.65 + 69.64 = ?

Answer: 105.29

  1. Align the decimal points: 35.65 + 69.64.
  2. Work in hundredths: 3565 + 6964 = 10529; place the point two digits from the right to get 105.29.
A practical approach

Line up place values before adding

Select tenths or hundredths and choose mixed questions, regrouping practice, or no-regrouping practice. The answer key aligns the same decimal places and shows the whole-number units used before restoring the point.

Ask learners to estimate the size of a sum before calculating. A misplaced decimal point can otherwise produce an answer with plausible digits but an impossible magnitude.

Teaching notes

Use this practice well

Line up the decimal points and add from the smallest place to the largest. Use an estimate before calculating to catch misplaced decimal points.

What this develops

Make decimal addition sheets with a chosen number of decimal places and worked place-value steps.

A mistake to watch for

Adding digits without aligning tenths and hundredths can create a plausible but incorrect sum.

Ways to use it

  • Practise tenths before hundredths.
  • Compare sums that regroup with sums that do not.
  • Print a short check after a place-value lesson.

Scope and limits

Only nonnegative finite decimals are generated.
