What a question looks like

Example questionWhat is the capital of New York?

Answer: Albany

  1. Albany is the capital of New York.
A practical approach

Learn the pair, then locate it

First practise from state to capital, then reverse the direction. The reverse round checks whether the learner knows the pair rather than recognizing a familiar state name. Keep rounds short when introducing a new region and mix all states when reviewing.

A capital is not necessarily a state’s largest or best-known city. After an incorrect answer, find the state and capital on a map and say the pair aloud. Use the key to correct the connection before generating another version.

Teaching notes

Use this practice well

Practise in small regional groups, then mix regions once recall improves. Locate both the state and its capital on a map after checking an answer.

What this develops

Match US states with their capitals in a repeatable quiz.

A mistake to watch for

The best-known or largest city in a state is often not its capital.

Ways to use it

  • Study a region at a time.
  • Make a five-question retrieval check.
  • Revisit missed pairs later.

Scope and limits

The quiz covers state capitals, not state abbreviations or territorial capitals.

Sources and scope

State-capital pairs were checked against U.S. Census reference material.
